Questions
What people ask before sending a rug.
Cost, turnaround, collection, and the awkward questions about pets and moths, answered plainly.
How much does antique rug restoration cost?
- Restoration is quoted per piece, because price follows the amount of hand work involved rather than the size of the rug. A wash with minor edge repair is modest; reweaving an open area in a fine silk carpet can take weeks at the loom. We inspect the rug, photograph it, and send a written quote before any work begins, there is no charge for the assessment.
How long does the work take?
- Workshop rug cleaning takes about two weeks on average; every rug is different, and any repairs needed will extend that time. Restoration and conservation are scheduled at assessment, and we agree the timing with you in writing.
Do you collect and deliver?
- Yes. Pickup and delivery are free. We collect across New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Northern New Jersey and Fairfield County, and you are welcome to bring a rug to either studio during opening hours.
Where is the work carried out?
- Where the work is done depends on the piece and what it needs. Cleaning, repair and restoration are carried out at our Williston Park workshop or in your home, and our Greenpoint studio in Brooklyn is there for city clients to bring a piece in and meet us.
Can you remove pet stains and odor?
- Usually, yes. Urine is the hardest case, because it travels into the foundation and can move the dyes. We flush the affected area, neutralize it, and wash the whole rug by immersion rather than surface-cleaning it. If a dye has already shifted we will tell you honestly what can and cannot be recovered.
What do you do about moth damage?
- We wash the rug to remove larvae and eggs, treat it against reinfestation, and then rebuild any pile or foundation that has been eaten. Moths favor quiet rooms and undersides of furniture, so we also advise on where the rug sits and how to store it out of season.
Is it safe to clean an antique rug with water?
- With the right preparation, yes, full-immersion washing is the traditional and gentlest method. We test every color for dye stability first, adjust the wash accordingly, and dry the rug flat under controlled conditions. Steam cleaning and rotary machines are what damage old rugs, not water.
Do you clean wall-to-wall carpet as well as rugs?
- We do. Wall-to-wall carpet is cleaned in place, and we also measure, supply, and install new broadloom, padding, and stair runners, removing and disposing of the old floor covering as part of the job.
Do you work with insurance claims and appraisals?
- Yes. We provide written condition reports with photographs, treatment records, and replacement-value context that insurers and appraisers accept. Tell us at the outset that a claim is involved so we document accordingly.
Can you match the original colors?
- We dye wool and silk to match by hand, drawing on natural dyes and a long reference library. On an aged rug the aim is not a factory-fresh color but a match to the fiber as it is now, so the repair disappears into the field.
How do I get started?
- Send photographs of the whole rug and any damaged areas, with rough dimensions, through the contact form, or call 516 234 1095. We reply within one business day.
