A hand-knotted rug is repairable almost indefinitely, which is exactly why it matters who does it. Poor work is often permanent: a hole closed by gluing a patch behind it, or a fringe machine-sewn onto a cut end, cannot be undone without further loss.

Cleaning, repair, restoration, conservation — they are different jobs

Cleaning removes soil. Repair fixes damage so the rug can go back on the floor. Restoration returns the rug toward its original appearance through reweaving. Conservation stabilises a piece so it stops deteriorating, with the least intervention possible, and is what museum and collection pieces need.

A shop should tell you which of these your rug wants, and be willing to recommend the smaller job.
