Rug conservation for Northern New Jersey houses.

The older suburbs of Northern New Jersey are full of rugs bought for houses that were built to last: large Persian carpets in living rooms, Oushaks in dining rooms, runners on long staircases. After decades in place they tend to show the same signs, sun fading along a window wall, flattened pile under furniture, and soil packed deep into the foundation.

For antique pieces we work conservatively: stabilize first, replace only what is lost, and keep every treatment reversible and recorded. For rugs in daily use we wash by hand, test every color first, and repair edges and ends before they unravel further.

Hudson County is a different job. In Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken most rugs live in apartments and brownstones, so collection is planned around building rules, freight elevators, loading times and, where needed, a certificate of insurance for the management office. We handle that paperwork before the day.

Every job begins with photographs and a written condition report, which is useful for insurance and for the family who will one day inherit the rug.

Where the work is done depends on the piece and what it needs. Cleaning, repair and restoration are carried out at our Williston Park workshop or in your home, and our Greenpoint studio in Brooklyn is there for city clients to bring a piece in and meet us.

Workshop rug cleaning takes about two weeks on average; every rug is different, and any repairs needed will extend that time.
